For its April trip the Mahgroynin Mountaineering Club headed for Ratagan Youth Hostel to tackle some of the wonderful Kintail hills. After a very late spring we were rewarded with a fantastic hot and sunny day with clear visibility all around. If only we had snow shoes our progress would have been easier! Our walk started at Lundie and followed the good path up past An Cruachan to the top of Carn Ghluasaid, the first of the three easterly Munros North of Cluanie loch. From here we continued to the top of Sgurr nan Conbhairean, which had a good amount of snow on it for the end of April, and then onto Sail Chaorainn, the third of the three Munros. From Sail Chaorainn we had to climb back up a fair bit of Sgurr nan Conbhairean to get to the top of Drochaid an Tuill Easaich. Gorm Lochan was still frozen and covered in snow, despite the sun. It was a pleasant descent down the ridge to the west of Allt Coire Lair, which was carrying so much water we couldn't cross it and had to descend to the road. From there it was a short walk back to the car and then a cool beer in Cluanie Inn. An excellent day in the hills.
